Amber deposits and the extraction process
From the shores of the Baltic Sea to our workshop. Follow the journey of the raw stone before it becomes a finished product.
The journey that Baltic amber takes before becoming luxury jewellery is fascinating. Millions of years ago, in the Eocene epoch, the resin of ancient coniferous trees, thickening and falling to the ground, trapped fragments of the world as it was then. Over time, through geological processes, it transformed into the fossilised resin we call succinite today.
The world’s most famous amber deposits are located on the shores of the Baltic Sea, particularly in Poland, Russia and Lithuania. The Gold of the Baltic is extracted in two main ways: by washing it out from deposits on the seabed, from where storms cast it onto beaches, and by exploiting open-pit mines where the raw material is extracted using hydraulic methods.
Carefully selected nuggets find their way to our workshop. Every piece of raw material is thoroughly analysed for colour, clarity and potential inclusions. Only then do the craftsmen decide on the final shape into which a given stone will be polished.
The crafting process requires extraordinary precision, respect for the material and experience. At Your Amber, we try to interfere with the stone’s structure as little as possible, preserving its natural beauty, which makes every item we produce absolutely unique.
